Name: SEaM Camp
Date: July 7, 2014 - July 11, 2014
Event Description:

Learn more about engineering and manufacturing careers in the Brainerd Lakes Area through a camp experience tailored specifically for high school students.

SEaM camp is a one week adventure for students 6th grade through 12th grade which gives them an opportunity to experience hands on Electronics, Motor Controllers, Mechanical Drafting, Manufacturing Machining and Robotics Automated Systems.

Research shows that a workplace connection creates relevance, guides careers and educational goals, and connects regional employers with graduates. Allowing students to observe workplace activities, discuss the education and training required, and find out what qualities are desired in a potential employee helps put futures in focus.

2014 SEaM Camp Details
Monday - Friday, July 7-11
At Central Lakes College (Staples Campus)

  • From the first day of camp, students begin building their “Battlebots” from kits having hundred of parts. Each student assembles their robot in their own design for capabilities in maneuvering an obstacle course or controlling weapons for Battlebot wars in the competition held on the last day of camp.
  • Students will get expert instruction in Mechanical Drafting to design a personalized name plate to put on their robot. After completing the design, each student will machine the metal name plate out of a piece of aluminum in the Machine Trades department.
  • Students are also given instruction on Robotics Automated Systems in the areas of electronics and low voltage motor controllers with demonstrations in automated welding and industrial robots.
  • On the last day of SEaM camp students, participate in an afternoon of Battlebot competition. Each pair of students control their Battlebot robots in maneuvering through an obstacle course of cones, ramps and tunnels. Awards are given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.
  • After the obstacle course, teams are formed for “Robot Hockey”. This is a timed event where they try to score as many goals as they can. Awards are given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.
  • Students are given a brief time for making any necessary repairs or modifications for the Main Event.
  • The Main Event is the “Battlebot Demolition Derby”. Each team is given Pit Passes for quick repairs and battery charging in order to be the last Battlebot running. Awards are given to 1st and 2nd place teams.
